The Finch Project Edinburgh - 'A Tale Worth Telling' - September 2026 Solo Show

Thank you to everyone who joined me on Thursday September 10th for the opening of A Tale Worth Telling at The Finch Project's new gallery at 31 Dundas Street in Edinburgh. I am honoured to present the first exhibition in the new gallery space. Having just returned from Enter Art Fair in Copenhagen, Nikki Finch and the Finch Project team did a fantastic job getting the gallery ready to open and the show installed in record time. And thank you to the neighbouring galleries, local artists, and collectors for attending the opening to be so supportive of the gallery and me.

The show brings together ten new paintings made this spring in my Victoria studio and runs through the 17th of October. My description of the show follows:

'A TALE WORTH TELLING'

I have borrowed the titles for these paintings from the vocabulary of writing: prose, synopsis, trope, allusion, verisimilitude. They are meant provocatively, but lightly. They are a way of admitting that what I bring home from a morning in the woods, or overlooking the ocean, is not a record of the place but a version of it, shaped by how long I stayed and what I was paying attention to. None of it is accurate, and I have stopped apologising for that.

The places I paint are the forests and shorelines of coastal British Columbia, where I have lived my whole life. It is not the grand country people tend to imagine when they think of Canada. It is wet and close and green, somewhere you go on an ordinary afternoon rather than somewhere you set out for. Bringing this work to Scotland feels less like crossing a distance than arriving somewhere that already knows what I am talking about: both are northern places where the weather comes in off the water, and both have the deeply ingrained habit of going out into the landscape and coming back with something to say about it. What I hope is that the paintings work the same way in reverse, and that someone standing in front of one is not being shown my surroundings so much as reminded of their own.
