MAAT Gallery Paris - ‘Just Beyond’ - July 2026 Solo Show

Thank you to everyone who joined me on July 2nd for the opening of Just Beyond, my first solo show with MAAT Gallery in Paris. The exhibition runs through July 31st, and it was a real privilege to see this body of work installed and lit so beautifully in the gallery's space on Rue de Braque. Thank you to Gallery Director Paul William and Carla Garier for their care in bringing the show together and for such a warm welcome.

The show opening happened to fall just after Paris Fashion Week, and the crowd that evening reflected it, easily the most stylishly turned out opening I've had. What struck me most, though, was the range of people who came through the door. I had the chance to finally meet, in person, several collectors who own my work, but had never met in person. A number of young artists, collectors and curators also made a point of attending, some travelling a distance to do so, and their curiosity and questions about the work were a pleasure to engage with.

We were also joined by friends from Antwerp: NQ Gallery director Niqui van Olphen and gallery artist Erwin Keustermans and his wife Sofie made the trip to Paris for the evening, a lovely continuation of the connection that began with my Beaver Trail show at NQ Gallery back in March.

‘JUST BEYOND’

This exhibition, entitled Just Beyond, is named for where my work actually lives: a half-step outside the visible world, on the edge of memory and perception, in the spaces between things. I have always painted from that threshold, where beyond the first impression of a forest or shoreline lie other levels, quieter and less obvious. Not a landscape as you would find it, but what remains once I have looked away.

I begin every painting with colour, mixed sometimes for half an hour until it's exactly right, then build the canvas by feel in oil and oil stick, working the line back into the wet paint so it carries the speed and energy of these places just beyond our grasp. With this body of work the palette has darkened and moved into lower light, dusk and dark, the hour when a forest stops being a view in front of you and becomes something you feel your way through. The titles Night Path, Late Night Dip and Moon Tides keep to that same edge, where what's visible is just out of reach.
