‘Becoming The Story’ Show

My second solo exhibition at Bau-xi Vancouver will be opening on Saturday April 15th, 2023. I will be at the gallery from 2-4pm for an opening reception.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Entangled in the analogue world of pure pigment and tactile surface I put my trust in the process to take me to a new chapter in my story of painting.

These new works are a journey to unknown places, and undefined times, and they share a very human connection and reaction to these experiences. My enduring love for natural environments draws me to reach places I haven't been and after immersing myself in these settings I then return to the studio with the energy taken from my observations.

The subjects vary: trees talking, no shouting; ocean-life strangled, and reaching for clean waters; hearts aching, a collective loss. These things reach me and in return I express them through a palette selection of unexpected combinations. With paint I tell their stories and by trusting my intuition I imagine new beginnings to tales that inspire empathy, create sanctuary, and bring hope.

By exploring the essence of the landscape, both imaginary and figuratively, my new work is a tangled journey that unravels new chapters in each painting. I have challenged myself to find new ways to be the storyteller but also be part of the story, as I am a critical character, and my observations and courage to share are integral to a good ending.

Each painting is a surprise to me, and I can’t wait to discover the next plot twist.
